Alternatives to Traditional Braces

There was a time, and we really aren’t talking about that many years ago, when those individuals who required orthodontic treatment for misaligned or crooked teeth faced years of wearing traditional metal braces. Not only were these rather obvious, they were often uncomfortable and rather unattractive, which, for many youngsters, led to much misery at school due to name calling. There wasn’t really any other alternative, except of course not straightening your teeth at all, so it was really only younger people who ended up wearing braces.

Dental technology has moved on a long way since then and there are now some fantastic alternatives to the more traditional braces available. These alternatives are much more discreet, which means that some adults are even making the decision to straighten their teeth after living with a crooked smile for many years.

Clear Braces

Unlike the more traditional braces, the sort with visible small metal brackets and wires that are attached to the front of the teeth and are very visible to other people, clear braces are as the name suggests clear. They are however pretty much the same thing as traditional braces. But, they have the advantage of having clear brackets and tooth coloured wires, rendering them almost invisible to other people unless they are really looking.

For anyone who is very self-conscious about their teeth but is also self-conscious about the idea of wearing braces that are very visible, these can be a great alternative. The end result is still the same as it would be with a more traditional set of braces – teeth that are straighter and well aligned – but the overall process of wearing braces can be considerably less off putting.

Invisalign Braces

Invisalign braces are a type of braces that are sometimes referred to as invisible braces. They are worn in a completely different way to the clear braces mentioned above as they are not fixed to the teeth permanently.

These braces consist of a series of individual, clear “trays” that are in fact removable. They do however work in the same sort of way to straighten your teeth and improve your smile. The trays cover each tooth completely and over the course of time they move your teeth into a better position. These braces can help to align teeth or decrease spaces between your teeth.

Because every individual’s teeth are different your dentist will need to take a couple of impressions of your teeth in order to create a set of Invisalign braces that will work for you teeth. The clear aligners that are created from the impression are designed to move the teeth just a tiny amount. Further impressions and sets of aligners will also be created and used in sequence in order to gently, and very slowly, move the teeth back in to line over a lengthy period of time.

This type of braces are worn all day except when eating and will be worn for a period of time that will on average be anywhere from six months to around the two-year mark. Whilst this length of time might have previously worried people when wearing traditional braces, because these are clear and barely noticeable, you will feel more confident wearing them.

What are you waiting for?

If you are unhappy about your teeth and have avoided the idea of braces because you didn’t realise there were other options available to the more traditional ones, then don’t wait any longer. These alternative braces are much more discreet and equally as effective making it possible for you to have the teeth you always wanted.
