We hear all the time how important it is that we take care of our heart, and little lifestyle changes like eating well and exercising on a more regular basis are important to make sure that we stay healthy. You don’t have to do lengthy sessions at the gym to be healthy, exercising a little bit on a regular basis can have significant health benefits for you.
An angina attack, which occurs in the form of a tightness, pain or discomfort in the chest, can be a serious warning that your health may be at risk. Angina is not in itself a life-threatening condition, but it is a warning sign that you may have health issues that need to be addressed.
It is a good idea to be aware of the signs and symptoms of Angina so that you know what to look out for.
Angina causes a discomfort that is most commonly felt as a pain in the chest. This can be a dull, heavy or even tight pain, in women (and in some men) this may also present as a sharp stabbing pain. Some people describe the pain as feeling like a pressure or a squeezing, others a burning sensation. This pain can often occur as a result of exertion such as stress or physical exercise. Usually this type of pain will cease following a few minutes of rest.
In addition to the pain in the chest Angina may present itself as a pain that spreads to the left arm, neck, jaw, back or even shoulder. This pain will usually occur at the same time as the pain in the chest.
Whilst nausea can often be a sign of many other conditions, it can also be a symptom of Angina, Other symptoms can also be breathlessness or shortness of breath, a pain that occurs in the lower chest or belly – this may feel similar to indigestion. It is also likely that you may feel very tired or even suffer from dizziness.
Of course, many of these symptoms could be signs of other medical conditions, however they can also be an indication of Angina as well. It is possible that you could suffer from some or all of these symptoms without the chest pains that are more traditionally associated with Angina.

Making an urgent appointment to see a doctor is important so that you can be assessed and if necessary given the most appropriate course of treatment. With GP waiting times for appointments so high you might prefer to go private so that you can been seen quicker.
When the symptoms occur, it is important to stop what you were doing and rest. If the symptoms go away in a few minutes that make that appointment with a doctor. If they do not stop in a few minutes, then you should seek immediate medical attention as you may be having a heart attack – it is always better to be checked out.
Remember that the symptoms and treatment of Angina will vary from person to person, if however, you have any concerns about your health, and especially any chest pains that you might experience, then seeing a doctor as soon as you can is very important as it could mean catching a medical condition early on.
